The project

The context

Dating from the 16th and 19th centuries, this château underwent extensions in the early 20th century. Entrusted with its rehabilitation, our architecture firm successfully harmonized these different layers of construction. We recreated a wing and a large rotunda staircase. A horseshoe-shaped structure as well as one of the château’s courtyards were rebuilt to accommodate the uses defined by the owner (bedrooms, wine cellar, hunting room, and reception lounges). The château’s outbuildings were transformed into a spa, and a swimming pool, both covered and open to nature, was added. Finally, the adjoining farmhouse was restored to house the maintenance staff.

The layouts

The existing master plan is organized around a cobbled courtyard open to the southwest. The building, constructed in successive phases throughout history, is composed of elements from the 12th, 19th, and 20th centuries with various finishes: brick, stone, and plaster.

The architectural approach is based on the continuity of this philosophy, carrying out extensions in phases to complete the story of this residence. A cobbled courtyard, open to the southwest, will be enclosed by four wings—one part being existing and renovated, and the other built in the spirit of the original. This extension is designed to blend seamlessly with the site and the history of the estate.

Interior architecture

Access to the building will be through an existing stone and plastered porch, which will be preserved and restored. Behind this porch, a courtyard unfolds in two parts:

  • To the west, four squares of lawn bordered by hedges, each planted with a liquidambar tree.
  • To the east, the existing cobbled courtyard is extended along with the building, with a stag statue placed at its center.
  • To the south of the courtyard, another porch leads into a wooded and finely landscaped park.
  • South of the building, a large landscaped and tree-filled patio is created, overlooking the swimming pool and the spa club.

The interior spaces

North wing

The entrance hall, featuring a stone staircase with an iron wrought balustrade, provides access to a series of adjoining salons: study, smoking room, small lounge, and grand salon.

On the first floor is a suite and the main bedrooms with their respective dressing rooms and bathrooms. On the second floor are two additional suites. Outside, the north façade of brick and stone will be restored.

West wing

A large portrait gallery accessible from the entrance hall privately connects the smoking room and the grand dining room.

Another large gallery on the cobbled courtyard side connects the grand reception room to the entrance hall. The kitchen, located between the dining room and the grand reception room, is connected to both, as well as to the large gallery on the courtyard side. The grand reception room features a generous ceiling height and a coffered ceiling illuminated by high windows. On the first floor are two guest suites, each with its own dressing room and bathroom. On the second floor are three additional suites, one of which is a true apartment composed of two bedrooms equipped with dressing rooms, bathrooms, bars, and television rooms.

Basement

The basement is built beneath the extension. It is composed of three areas:

  • The technical area, accessible from the staircase and freight elevator of the west wing.
  • The wine cellar area, featuring a vaulted tasting room.
  • The spa area, composed of a swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna, hammam, and massage room. The pool opens onto a large landscaped patio planted with four century-old olive trees.
